The realm of TMJ problems can range from simple to very complex. Fortunately, in probably 95% of the situations, it's a problem that can be treated very simply. A lot of times people don't even know they have TMJ problems. We have patients come in for routine new patient examinations and they complain of frequent headaches, headaches when they wake up in the morning. There's not too many things that cause that problem outside of drinking too much the night before or clenching and grinding their teeth while they're asleep and overworking the muscles that are in the side of the face. It can stress out the jaw joint and give them pain and discomfort, and sometimes it's hard for them to really figure out where it's coming from and what the causes are. Fortunately, a lot of the times we can make a mouth piece that they wear at night that gets the pressure off the jaw joint, gives their teeth a better fit and actually can relieve their symptoms without surgery, without medications, and without a lot of involved treatment.

Signs Of A Teeth Grinding Or TMJ Disorder
Teeth grinding can result from many different sources, including stress, an abnormal bite, or missing teeth. Teeth grinding can also be a symptom of a TMJ disorder (TMD).
Temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, is just a fancy technical term for the complex joint connecting your upper and lower jaw. Because this connection is so complicated, a lot of issues can occur involving your TMJ.
To know for certain if you have a TMD, you should get a professional diagnosis. That said, if you are experiencing these issues, you may have a TMD:
- Involuntary teeth grinding
- Pain in your face, jaw, or neck
- Having an earache without any infection being present
- A tired feeling in your face
- A jaw that gets “stuck” in the opened or closed position
- Popping, clicking, or grating sounds while chewing
- Swelling around your jaw
Our Custom Solutions for Jaw Issues
If you suffer from teeth grinding or a TMD, we can help with both by providing a custom mouthguard or splint!
For either affliction, this custom solution will slightly shift your jaw while you sleep to prevent clenching, grinding, and other involuntary behaviors that put undue stress on your jaw and teeth. This will also allow your jaw to rest and heal!
