Whether or not a dentist performs oral surgery in their office probably depends an awful lot on what their comfort zone is, their training, and what services they choose to provide to patients. Oral surgery can range anywhere from a simple tooth extraction all the way up through complex bone augmentations, ridge augmentations for implants, sinus augmentations for implants.
In dentistry, there's typically two specialties that deal with mostly surgical procedures, and that's an oral surgeon of course, and a periodontist. In my background and my training, I've got both a general dental degree and a periodontal specialty degree. So I was trained through a specialty program in a lot of different oral surgical procedures that many dentists just aren't trained to offer in their practice.
I've studied under some of the best implant dentists and implant surgeons in the world to learn a number of complex surgical procedures, so if a patient wants to have dental implants, we're able to offer a number of the more complex procedures to rebuild the width of a bone, rebuild the height of a jaw, add bone or graft bone into their sinuses so we can actually place implants properly to restore their teeth and to restore function.
Our oral surgery options include:
- Tooth Removals / Extractions — A severely damaged or infected tooth that is beyond repair will need to be removed to preserve the health of your mouth.
- Ridge Augmentation — This procedure repairs the jaw for tooth replacement options, dental implants or dentures.
- Sinus Lifts — We’ll lift your sinuses in your upper jaw to make room dental implants.
- Gum Grafts — We’ll build up gums after recession or infection to keep the tissue healthy and functional.
- Bone Grafts — A thin jawbone can make it impossible to place implants, so a bone graft builds up the jaw to set the stage for implant placement.
Dr. Hoop and the dental team will ensure that you’re comfortable throughout any treatment. We often recommend that our oral surgery patients use sedation dentistry. We can use a heavy oral conscious sedation to keep you at ease and make visits more pleasant!
