Well, we only offer white tooth colored fillings in the practice. I haven't done a silver amalgam filling in probably over about 15 years. I'm sure a lot of people are aware of some of the controversies out there with silver amalgam fillings, and the concerns with mercury. There's a lot of evidence pointing that it's probably not a problem, but the easy solution really in this day and age is that the white filling materials are better, they're stronger, they tend to last longer, they don't wear as rapidly and they don't create some of the cracks and other problems that the older silver amalgam fillings actually created in teeth. I think that in this day and age, since the composite materials we have available are excellent, they're adhesive, they seal and bond to the tooth better, they have better mechanical properties, and there isn't the controversy over them with the mercury. It's just a better choice, and most people would prefer to have white fillings over silver fillings.

Maintain Natural Smile With Tooth-Colored Restorations
Dr. Hoop is dedicated to repairing teeth with natural-looking solutions that strengthen your smile. Rather than using metal fillings or metal-based materials, he uses composite materials that blend in easily with your smile. These composite fillings are strong, durable and require less removal of tooth enamel.
Tooth fillings are one of the first lines of defense against tooth decay. We’ll gently remove the decay from the surface of the tooth and then bond the composite material to the tooth. The entire procedure takes 15 minutes! If the tooth cannot be restored with a filling, we might recommend a dental crown.
Here are some ways you can keep your mouth cavity-free:
- Great Oral Health Routine — Brush twice a day for two minutes each time and floss daily.
- Dental Cleanings and Exams — We’ll remove dangerous substances from the tooth before decay sets in. We’ll also polish teeth to make it harder for things like plaque and tartar to stick to them.
- Fluoride Treatments — Fluoride is a natural substance proven to reduce the risk of tooth decay. These treatments during your regular cleanings are ideal for cavity-prone patients.
From placing tooth fillings to filling all of your restorative dentistry needs, Dr. Hoop’s practice is the place for you. We make every treatment convenient, affordable, and even pleasant with tools like sedation dentistry.
