Dentures are a popular, affordable method to replace missing teeth. While we tend to think of them as a solution only for the elderly, that’s simply not the case! Age is not the only factor that leads to tooth loss, and there are plenty of younger adults who could benefit from dentures, too. Keep reading to learn why dentures aren’t just for seniors!
Why Would Younger Adults Need Dentures?
There are other solutions, like dental implants, that are great for replacing a single missing tooth. If you have lost many teeth, though, then your dentist may want to have you fitted for dentures. While yes, tooth loss is common as we grow older, there are plenty of reasons why younger adults might have lost so many teeth, including:
- Severe tooth decay. If you had years of poor dental hygiene, you might have developed cavities and decay that spread. If left untreated, this can eventually impact our jawbone which can lead to tooth loss.
- Periodontitis. In this advanced stage of gum disease, the gums retract from the teeth. As they do, our teeth can weaken and fall out.
- Other health conditions. Sometimes tooth loss is due to factors beyond our control like diabetes or juvenile arthritis. Medications for these can also sometimes harm our teeth.
- Teeth grinding. If you’ve struggled with grinding your teeth long-term, then you might have put enough strain on the supporting bones to cause them to weaken.
- Trauma. Those who participate in contact sports might have been injured by a blow to the face that knocked out a few teeth.
How Will Dentures Help Me?
It can be embarrassing to lose so many teeth as a younger adult, but it’s not the first time it’s happened, and it won’t be the last! Your dentist has seen patients from all walks of life who have suffered and need dentures. They have the experience and knowledge to equip you with false teeth that will look like your natural pearly whites, so no one will ever know that you’re wearing false teeth. You can eat, speak, and smile normally without anyone the wiser! This can boost not only your health, as you’re able to eat a variety of foods again, but also your confidence in yourself.
If you’ve lost teeth but have been too proud to ask your dentist about dentures, remember that you’re not alone. Your dentist is aware of all the reasons that can lead to tooth loss and will want to provide you with a solution to improve your quality of life, regardless of your age.
