Lumineers vs. Traditional Dental Veneers

Lumineers and traditional dental veneers are two of the most popular restorative cosmetic dentistry solutions today. Both use thin yet durable material to provide a natural-looking solution to many common dental issues.
To determine which option is best for you, talk to Dr. George A. Hoop at Total Dental Solutions for Adults to discuss your individual situation, including your overall health, dental health history, and personal expectations.
Call to set up an appointment at our dental practice with locations in North Naples (239) 594-8817 and Fort Myers, FL (239) 939-7299. In the meantime, learn more about Lumineers and traditional dental veneers to get an idea of which one may work best for you.

What Are Lumineers?

LUMINEERS® is a brand of porcelain veneers. Lumineers are a unique kind of dental veneer in the way they are made and placed. Lumineers are ultra-thin shells of porcelain that are placed over existing teeth to improve their appearance and function.
Lumineers are a great cosmetic solution for stained, discolored, chipped, or misaligned teeth.

How Are Lumineers Different than Traditional Dental Veneers?

What makes Lumineers different than traditional dental veneers is that there is no need to remove tooth structure before placing them. Traditional veneers are wafer-thin, usually about 0.5 millimeters thick, whereas Lumineers are as thin as a contact lens, or about 0.3 millimeters thick.
Because traditional veneers are thicker than Lumineers, the teeth need to be prepared first. Traditional veneers are then permanently bonded to your teeth. This ensures they are a long-lasting solution, but also means that the process is irreversible.
Lumineers require less preparation before they are applied to your teeth, which means they are potentially reversible, but also means they typically aren’t expected to last as long as traditional dental veneers. Also, because Lumineers are so thin, they aren’t as effective at hiding teeth that are severely stained or damaged.

Which Type of Veneer is Right for Me?

Veneers are an investment, regardless of which kind you get. In most cases, they aren’t covered by insurance, which means this decision is one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. However, it’s worth noting that there are advantages to choosing either option, and our team at ABC DENTAL will work hard to make sure you are completely satisfied with whichever kind you choose.
When trying to decide between Lumineers and traditional dental veneers, there are a few things you should keep in mind:

  • Lumineers are a brand of veneers made by a specific dental laboratory, which means not all dentists offer them.
  • Veneers aren’t right for everyone. Certain dental issues may require different treatment.
  • Veneers cost more than other treatments, but we offer payment plans to make them suitable for just about any budget.
